Ninety Year Old Track and Field Athlete Wins Third Gold in Adelaide.

Ninety year old triple gold medallist Roger Churchward is the oldest track and field competitor at the Australia’s Masters Games this year. A gold medal in today’s 5km run made it three gold medals in three events for Roger, after also winning the 100m and 800m runs, on Saturday.

Roger’s passion for running started at age fifty, “one night my teenage daughter wanted to go for a night time run, so I went with her, but I could only keep up for about 100m before I had to walk back home. I knew then and there I needed to get better with my fitness, so I slowly improved my running”.

Roger said. “I entered a fun run in Adelaide after I’d improved my running a bit, and I loved it, so I’ve kept running for fun. It feels great to be this fit at my age and it’s nice to be the oldest competitor in track and field, I’m always glad I made the decision to get fit”.

Roger first competed at the Master’s Games in his hometown Melbourne, in 1995, age 70 and surprised himself by winning the gold medal in the 10km run. Since then he has travelled all over Australia taking part in the Games.

The athlete credits 40 years of running in prolonging and improving the quality of his life and has no intention of stopping any time soon,  “I feel great, my body is holding up well, I have no reason to stop just yet, I’ll keep running for as long as I can. I learned what it was like to not be able to run, and I like this feeling a lot better”.

Roger is a perfect example of the health benefits and well being in keeping fit which is what the Masters Games are all about.

Whilst not yet confirmed, the athlete understands his time for the 5km run was an Australian record for his age group.  He is looking forward to the next games and breaking more records.

The 15th Australian Masters Games are being held in Adelaide, October 3-10, featuring more than 10,000 participants from across Australia and around the world.

The Australian Masters Games is proudly sponsored by the South Australian Tourism Commission through Events South Australia.
