Whilst there’s no particular set way to define a plan for success, the ‘Adeladies’ hockey team have a motto list that sums up the Australian Masters Games.
“Number one was enjoy; number two was celebrate; number three was help out, support, positivity; the fourth one was assumption, that we are all doing the best we can and number five is make your own luck,” explains team coach, Sue Lohmeyer.
Playing in the 30+ female hockey division, and having a wide variety of playing experience and talent, their five goals for the Games, encompass the mindset of so many athletes participating in the week-long festivities involving 49 sports.
One member of the Adelaides Hockey team is Kate Anderson, who has only been playing hockey for the Adelaide Hockey Club since March this year.
“It’s been fantastic. It’s just great coming out and being a part of a group of women that have a passion and love for hockey, It doesn’t matter how old you are or how long you’ve been playing, it’s fantastic to be part of the atmosphere.”
Anderson is in stark contrast to club president Anne Collins, who has plenty of experience with the game she loves.
“I’ve played for about 35 years, and it’s just been one of those sports that when I’ve moved all over the world, you find a hockey team and it’s a way to meet people and have a lot of fun,” Collins said.
Whilst the team is made up of mostly players from the Adelaide Hockey Club, they’ve branched out to include players from three other clubs, a move which has also been seen as another great way to form new friendships.
As for how their mottos have applied to their play on the field?
“They’ve been very fun; we’ve won, so winners are grinners.” Lohmeyer said.
